We are hoping to have a another friendly fishing competition the beginning of November. Anyone that would like to volunteer their help or have any suggestions, it is most welcome. More news in the full article…

One of our members is planning to organize a wake boarding jam/friendly competition around that time too. Again, help and suggestions are all welcome. Drop us an email.

We have built a scullery (a place to do those dirty BBQ dishes), which I am sure the Dads will do. So get on down to the club, have a fantastic BBQ and yes, enjoy the new scullery and get those dishes sparkling clean. Guess the Mums will be inspecting? Next to the washing up area, we are putting up wash lines for campers to hang their wet towels and life jackets.

The volley ball net has been relocated close to where the campers are. The staff would love to have a game against our members. Ask Mano or Reggie they will organize it even if it is at the last minute. Any evening will do once the restaurant closes.

Need to rinse the salt water off; we have also built an outdoor shower near the camping area. For the little ones a large set of swings have been erected, also near the camping area, more friendly for those worried Mum and Dads.

We are presently doing some swimming pool renovations from relaying those slippery pool tiles to permanent shades. So no more flying umbrellas!

On the safety aspect, we will be putting up buoys along the beachfront to keep the jet skis away from the swimming area.

We would like to thank all members and their guests for their continued support and we look forward to another season.

See you on the water!

It was a sunny morning in the UAE on the 22nd of October, 2010, the same as the day before and the day before and the day before that. The seas were calm, the anglers in the mood, and the crack of dawn awoke them to the challenge. The tide too was willing, with the high waters bringing in the early fish.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it was the 5th running of the UAEQ Marina’s angling competition.

Seventeen boats loaded with forty nine registered hopefuls took off after thorough preparations, each skipper heading out to his favorite location, each boat anticipating a prize winning catch. It’s a good thing that fishermen always say it is not only catching fish that makes for a good day at sea. The comradeship for some, the solitude for others, and the casting off of cares are as much a part of the experience. However, under conditions like a tournament, the excitement level is always ratcheted up a few degrees because come weigh in time at 4:00, all participants want to be in the running for a prize. Fishing is luck but luck can be enhanced through skill and techniques. Those that consistently catch prize winning fish are not simply lucky. They are highly skilled in the art of angling and returning to the dock with a good catch perpetuates that reputation. For novice or less skilled anglers, luck may very well land them a winner as well, perhaps one large enough to take a top prize away from the more seasoned angler. There is always this wild card factor in a tournament which adds an element of surprise at weigh in time. I don’t recall the winners from past tournaments but it would be interesting if Jenny has an archive to see who, if anyone is a repeat winner. It would also be interesting to have that person give some tips to others on a Friday morning. But that will never happen…fishermen are not known for passing on secrets!

I do have one tip to pass on though a scrap of information I was privy to somehow…live bait. Forget the Rapala or Yozuri lures. It’s live bait, trolled slow. Course, you’ve got to get some live bait. Then you’ve got to keep that bait alive. Then you’ve got to not mind hooking it through the lip or dorsal fin and putting it out to sea to be devoured by that 11kg kingfish. If you manage all this, though, your catch will increase…guaranteed! If live bait is beyond your means, then the lures that Jenny is now selling from the clubhouse are also very, very good. Trolled deep, with one of those orange boards.

A sunny weekend in February saw the start of the first of five amateur wakeboard competitions across the UAE this year. The turquoise waters of Umm Al Quwain Marine Club offered the perfect setting to stage Stop # 1 of this extreme sporting event.

Keen wakeboarders from across the UAE & beyond met to show off their skills behind a boat, socialize with like-minded adrenaline junkies, stare in ore at the Pro Rider Demonstrations and most importantly have a lot of fun.

Amazingly a seven strong Kuwaiti Wakeboard Team flew in especially for the event, proving just how popular this sport is becoming around the Middle Eastern countries. Their journey was also well worth the effort as the Team Captain, Bader took home 1st place alongside team mate Mohammed who took 2nd in the Men’s Division. Their only female representative Jeanne also secured 2nd place in the closely competed Women’s Division.

Giving the Kuwaiti’s a run for their money were two Junior riders, Harry Cook and Drew Gibson. Harry, 15 from Sharjah and Drew, 14 from Dubai have recently won sponsorship deals with Al Boom Marine, Hyperlite wakeboards and O’neill apparel and blitzed the Junior Division with 1st and 2nd place respectively. Their eyes are now set on the podium for the Men’s Division also and time on the water training for new inverts (upside down flips) is top priority.

‘The UAE is now embracing wakeboarding much like the UK did 15 years ago,’ says organizer and former World Champion, Emma Jones. ‘We’ve had so much fun organizing the tour and realizing how much hidden talent there is here. Judging the riders was much tougher than Matt (Crowhurst, UK Pro Rider) and I ever imagined, there’ll be a real battle for the Overall Titles and the big prize of 2010 sponsorship from Hyperlite, Oneill & Oakley !’
